7 Surprising Health Facts

Health is always an issue we want to hear about, and scientists will never tire to dig into, coming up with facts that are sometimes rather unusual and unexpected. And if the new facts oughtn’t to be taken too seriously, but fun to discover, it is better yet! Here are some of the more obscure facts that should entertain you without making you worry overdue.

1. Check out your fingers

Compare your index finger and your ring finger. If the former is shorter, there is a two-times higher risk of developing knee osteoarthritis – says a study from Arthritis and Rheumatism a few years ago. It reasons that these women are characterized by a lower estrogen level – a factor linked with osteoarthritis risk. Some leg strengthening, however, may prove to be an antidote.

2. Check out citrus scents

If you easily identify citrus smells and know at once that there are lemons and bananas somewhere around, you are at the very least four years away from Parkinson’s Disease, as stated in a study from the Annals of Neurology. The idea is that Parkinson’s begins to wreak havoc with the part of the brain that can identify smells for as long as 7 years before it can actually be diagnosed. Fish oil supplements can support this brain function.

3. Check out legs

Legs falling within the range of 20 to 29 inches show that the woman is likely to have a higher level of the enzymes that can cause liver disease. There was a study in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health revealing that most cases of liver disease are linked with four enzymes. The study averred that childhood nutrition has a lot to do with liver health at any age.

4. Check out arms

Arms that are shorter than the average may be problematic for the health. Neurology published a study from which emerges that women having a shorter arm span are 1.5 times more susceptible to Alzheimer’s disease than women who have a longer arm span. You measure your span from one fingertip to the other holding arms parallel to the floor. The study gives figures of 60 inches and less. The reason for shorter arm spans can be, again, insufficient nutrition in childhood; it could later induce worsening of cognitive conditions.

5. Check out boobs

Remember yourself at 20? Were you glad that your size bra was a D cup or larger? On the one hand, it made you more confident of your femininity, on the other – more prone to diabetes. A study published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal reveals that a D+ cup at 20 boosts the diabetes likelihood by 1.5 times compared to smaller bra cups, even after considering weight, diet, family history and other important factors. Workouts are a good way to assist sugar metabolism, don’t miss out on them!

6. Check out calves

Carotid plaque – a risk factor for a stroke – is strangely enough linked with the size of calves, as French journal Stroke reports. Calves sized under 13 inches make your carotid plaque chances higher. So far scientists have been unable to find the reason behind this unusual correlation; yet the owners of small calves may find it advisable to have their heart checked just in case. Take green tea regularly.

7. Check out blood type

Blood type is an important health factor, and there is little wonder it also shows quaint correlations. From very expansive tests with over 105,000 participants conducted at Harvard Medical School emerged that people who have types A, B, and AB blood types may develop pancreas cancer with a whopping 44% odds compared to people with type O. That seems to be a strong immunity for blood O people, so all the rest should better take a vitamin D supplement
to ward off the probability. It guarantees lowering the risk by 40%.

Now is it good grounds to assess our vulnerability? Of course, you shouldn’t credit these facts with an influence they don’t really possess, but nevertheless, it may be good to heed these small precautions anyway, don’t you think?

Tax Credits and Investment Allowances

Tax Credits and Investment Allowances
Compared with tax holidays, tax credits and investment allowances have a number of advantages. They are much better targeted than tax holidays for promoting particular types of investment and their revenue cost is much more transparent and easier to control. A simple and effective way of administering a tax credit system is to determine the amount of the credit to a qualified enterprise and to "deposit" this amount into a special tax account in the form of a bookkeeping entry. In all other respects the enterprise will be treated like an ordinary taxpayer, subject to all applicable tax regulations, including the obligation to file tax returns. The only difference would be that its income tax liabilities would be paid from credits "withdrawn" from its tax account. In this way information is always available on the budget revenue forgone and on the amount of tax credits still available to the enterprise. A system of investment allowances could be administered in much the same way as tax credits, achieving similar results.
There are two notable weaknesses associated with tax credits and investment allowances. First, these incentives tend to distort choice in favor of short-lived capital assets since further credit or allowance becomes available each time an asset is replaced. Second, qualified enterprises may attempt to abuse the system by selling and purchasing the same assets to claim multiple credits or allowances or by acting as a purchasing agent for enterprises not qualified to receive the incentive. Safeguards must be built into the system to minimize these dangers.

Accelerated Depreciation - Providing tax incentives

Accelerated Depreciation - Providing tax incentives
Providing tax incentives in the form of accelerated depreciation has the least of the shortcomings associated with tax holidays and all of the virtues of tax credits and investment allowances—and overcomes the latter's weakness to boot. Since merely accelerating the depreciation of an asset does not increase the depreciation of the asset beyond its original cost, little distortion in favor of short-term assets is generated. Moreover, accelerated depreciation has two additional merits. First, it is generally least costly, as the forgone revenue (relative to no acceleration) in the early years is at least partially recovered in subsequent years of the asset's life. Second, if the acceleration is made available only temporarily, it could induce a significant short-run surge in investment.

7 Tips to Never Miss a Daily Workout

Let’s begin with a firm decision that the daily workout is a must for us and no matter how laden our schedule is we ought to fit it in one way or another. Actually, the busier we are, the more necessary the workout is, to fire us up for our other affairs. Find it a problem fitting it in? Maybe a few hints in time management will come in useful, it’s just a question of priorities.

1. Find Free Ten Minute Periods

It is understandable that your schedule may not allow for a free uninterrupted hour. Therefore, if you break your workout into – say – three ten-minute sessions, you will find it much easier to find time for these. There is a study leveling that three ten-minute sessions give your body the same benefit as one unbroken half-hour session. Just take care you include both cardio and strength exercises in your ten minutes for best effect.

2. Find Time in the Morning

Your day is too busy for words? Well, you can always find some time to spare in the morning if you choose to get up a bit earlier than you usually do. You can hardly expect to have urgent affairs at about 6 a.m. If you schedule your workout session for an early hour, nothing is likely to distract you and you will be primed for the busy day, having done justice for your health.

3. Find Time during the Lunch Break

You are bound to have at least half an hour for lunch, and you can dispose of the time otherwise. Take some 20 minutes for a short fitness session. If there is no convenient place nearby, you can always run around outdoors. You will enjoy a snack much better afterwards!

4. Snatch Some Time after Work

Right after you are through with your work, before you let the exhaustion take over, get into your fitness clothes and go over to the gym at work or drive over to your usual workout spot. You may find it’s a good time to shake yourself up and brace yourself for a long evening.

5. Rope in Your BFF or Boyfriend

Arrange with your friends or partner to have workouts together. This way you will get your exercising done and spend a quality time with those who are close to you. You won’t want to miss these events, and this kind of multitasking may well enrich your lives to a degree.

6. Stick Exercising into Your Schedule

Keep your fitness sessions fixed so it is easier for you to observe your schedule rather than try and find time for workout every day, it may get annoying at times. With workouts firmly embedded into your routine you will find it much more convenient to keep on.

7. Is There Time for Exercising on the Way to Work?

If your work is situated not too far from your place, how about getting there on a bike or even jogging? Besides shaking your body into health, you save some money and gas, or maybe avoid pushing yourself around in crowded transport.

So far as you consider exercising your priority, there are ways to get a session into your schedule however tight it is. Just get it into focus and get to feel better due to your successful time management and attention to your body.

Olive Oil Strengthens Bones

No foods can strengthen our bones like dairy products. That is what lots of people think, and they are wrong. A team of Spanish scientists has found that there is a no less useful product in this regard.

The experts from the medical center of Girona claim that olive oil and olives strengthen bones better than milk. They had a 2-year experiment, involving people who kept to a special diet.

Half of the volunteers were offered a Mediterranean diet, rich in olives and olive oil (first pressing), and the rest were offered to have a low-calorie diet.

After the experiment, it was found that the organism of the people, who had been eating olives, demonstrated higher concentration of osteocalcin protein, which is the marker of bone growth. The bones became stronger.

Other participants of the experiment experienced no change in the condition of their bones.

Triggering Mechanisms - tax incentives

Triggering Mechanisms - tax incentives
The mechanism by which tax incentives can be triggered can be either automatic or discretionary. An automatic triggering mechanism allows the investment to receive the incentives automatically once it satisfies clearly specified objective qualifying criteria, such as a minimum amount of investment in certain sectors of the economy. The relevant authorities have merely to ensure that the qualifying criteria are met. A discretionary triggering mechanism involves approving or denying an application for incentives on the basis of subjective value judgment by the incentive-granting authorities, without formally stated qualifying criteria. A discretionary triggering mechanism may be seen by the authorities as preferable to an automatic one because it provides them with more flexibility. This advantage is likely to be outweighed, however, by a variety of problems associated with discretion, most notably a lack of transparency in the decision-making process, which could in turn encourage corruption and rent-seeking activities. If the concern about having an automatic triggering mechanism is the loss of discretion in handling exceptional cases, the preferred safeguard would be to formulate the qualifying criteria in as narrow and specific a fashion as possible, so that incentives are granted only to investments meeting the highest objective and quantifiable standard of merit. On balance, it is advisable to minimize the discretionary element in the incentive-granting process.

Tax Policy Challenges Facing Developing Countries

Tax Policy Challenges Facing Developing Countries
Developing countries attempting to become fully integrated in the world economy will probably need a higher tax level if they are to pursue a government role closer to that of industrial countries, which, on average, enjoy twice the tax revenue. Developing countries will need to reduce sharply their reliance on foreign trade taxes, without at the same time creating economic disincentives, especially in raising more revenue from personal income tax. To meet these challenges, policymakers in these countries will have to get their policy priorities right and have the political will to implement the necessary reforms. Tax administrations must be strengthened to accompany the needed policy changes.
As trade barriers come down and capital becomes more mobile, the formulation of sound tax policy poses significant challenges for developing countries. The need to replace foreign trade taxes with domestic taxes will be accompanied by growing concerns about profit diversion by foreign investors, which weak provisions against tax abuse in the tax laws as well as inadequate technical training of tax auditors in many developing countries are currently unable to deter. A concerted effort to eliminate these deficiencies is therefore of the utmost urgency.
Tax competition is another policy challenge in a world of liberalized capital movement. The effectiveness of tax incentives—in the absence of other necessary fundamentals—is highly questionable. A tax system that is riddled with such incentives will inevitably provide fertile grounds for rent-seeking activities. To allow their emerging markets to take proper root, developing countries would be well advised to refrain from reliance on poorly targeted tax incentives as the main vehicle for investment promotion.
Finally, personal income taxes have been contributing very little to total tax revenue in many developing countries. Apart from structural, policy, and administrative considerations, the ease with which income received by individuals can be invested abroad significantly contributes to this outcome. Taxing this income is therefore a daunting challenge for developing countries. This has been particularly problematic in several Latin American countries that have largely stopped taxing financial income to encourage financial capital to remain in the country.

8 Year-Olds Understand Sarcasm

The ability to distinguish hidden mockery is formed by the age of eight years.

Canadian researchers from the University of Calgary have discovered that the better the child feels the other person, the easier he/she will recognize sarcasm. This usually occurs between the ages of 6 and 8 years, especially with simple phrases like “Well, thank you,” “Excellent!” etc.

Scientists observed the children aged 8-9 years, who were given the task to identify sarcasm in various scenes, played with toys. There were 31 participants in the group, and they had to choose the “greedy” shark or a “sweet” duck, if, in their opinion, they spoke sarcastically during the scenes. Each child was tested 12 times, using a variety of toys and scenarios. Empathic ability of the participants or, in other words, their ability to empathize with other people, was measured separately.

In general, the participants of the study guessed sarcasm in half of the cases. The children with high levels of empathy did it more accurately. They were twice as likely to indicate true characters that used sarcasm. In the group of 6 and 7-year-olds, all the participants had zero precision of performing the task.
