Scientists Invent the World Thinnest Circuit Board

Remember when we started from room sized computers and spacious data storage equipment? Today, we pocket gigabytes of information and the entire computers as sleek, handy devices weighing no more than a few pounds. Technology is racing today at a breakneck speed. Every now and then, the world of IT is witnessing mind-boggling inventions.

One similar astonishing invention in the world of IT is the thinnest and lightest electronic circuit! It wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say this feather light circuit is literally going to revolutionize the IT industry, perhaps even the biomedical sciences. Let us explore this cool science invention.

Weighing no more than 2 microns, this circuit has been designed by professors from the University of Tokyo. It has impressed the scientific community worldwide due to the extreme malleability and lightness. They have been dubbed as ‘imperceptible electronics’ that will not impair human movement if worn on the body.

But don’t let the circuit’s appearance fool you! It is not as fragile as it looks. The circuit is capable of bearing tensile strains as great as 233% or more. Although the technology behind this seemingly tiny electronic circuit is complex, the circuit does not cost an extravagant amount.

The circuits are primarily aimed for boosting biomedical healthcare techniques however; the future holds a lot of promise for this invention. These circuits have a bend radius of 5 microns, effectively providing them the desired mechanical bending capabilities. Currently, most biomedical healthcare devices rely on heavy silicon and plastic devices that hinder physical movement. You could literally wear this lightweight circuit forever and not even feel its presence!

They are extremely tough and being only 1/5 the thickness of a kitchen wrap, these circuits are capable of withstanding fall from heights of 1 meter or more. In lab tests, they have demonstrated immense durability.

The project has been tested successfully and is ready to be introduced into medical sciences by the end of 2017. This little device will probably provide millions of patients around the world, a comfortable and normal life. In these photos below, you can see how the grids are arranged on an ultrathin plastic sheet. Physical movement is totally unaffected by the circuit.

So, let’s hope and wait for the large scale launching of this revolutionary electronic circuit. Let a new era begin in medical healthcare and perhaps, the IT industry too.

AGENT Smartwatch

At present we are witnessing fierce competition on the smartphone market between the leading companies and several smaller manufacturers. But there is another marketing segment which develops a bit faster nowadays – the segment of  smartwatches. Although smartwatches are still behind the smartphones regarding performance, connectivity and apps, a look taken at different point of view shows that a smartwatch is far easier and comfortable to wear unlike most brick-like smartphones.

the following smart device we see some sort of union between the smartphone and the smartwatch. AGENT is a wristwatch which is connected to your smartphone via Bluetooth, so you can almost literally watch your smartphone from your wrist. It is able to work with iPhone 4S or newer, Windows Phone 8 and Android 2.3. The gadget has dual processor in order to save energy – while the main processor is kept in sleep mode, the secondary processor maintains the routine tasks, which decreases significantly the overall energy consumption. The watch is able to alert you about incoming messages, calls and in case you’re about to forget your smartphone somewhere.

AGENT supports .NET Micro Framework which improves the way that smartwatch apps are created. It uses 1,28 inches Sharp Memory Display and will be available for purchase at the end of 2013.

Habey Introduces Passive BIS-6590 Core i7 Industrial PC

Habey USA's passive BIS-6922 proved to be a winner when we reviewed it back in August. Even as the review gathered comments from our readers, Habey was busy building up on it to address concerns and put in improvements. Today, we are seeing the launch of the BIS-6590, the latest addition to Habey's family of fanless i7-based systems. The BIS-6590 uses the B75 chipset, and is meant for Ivy Bridge CPUs, though the chassis itself should find use in future products also.

Amongst the improvements are a newly designed ICEFIN case (with larger fins for better heat dissipation) and support for processors with higher TDPs (up to 65 W, as shown with a i7-3770S). While the system I/O is standard for the market (VGA, DVI, 6xUSB, Audio I/O, 2x GbE ports, 2 COM ports and optionally, four additional COM ports), the more interesting aspect is the ability of the chassis to accommodate full size expansion cards (for powerful routing applications, we could have multi-GbE network cards / GPU-heavy applications can also accommodate video cards, though it remains to be seen as to what the maximum TDP of any such GPU would be). Forsaking the additional COM ports even provides us with two full expansion slots -- two PCI or one PCI and one PCIe. The motherboard does have a mini PCIe slot for a wireless card or a 3G/4G module (SIM socket is on the motherboard, just like it was on the BIS-6922).

When we evaluated the BIS-6922, we found the maximum power consumption to be around 70 W. Habey indicates that the BIS-6590 could operate in a thermally safe manner even with the maximum power consumption around 120 W. The BIS-6590 also retains all the advantages of the BIS-6922 in terms of chassis features such as vent-hole-free design. We are waiting to hear more about the pricing of the system, but interested folks can head over to the source link for further information.

UDOO

Arduino is an open-source electronic platform often used for prototyping, art expressions and innovative designs. The platform is able to perceive signals from the surrounding environment via numerous sensors and form a response to the environment by using motors, lights and other mechanisms. IDE (Integrated Development Environment) could be downloaded for free and uses programming language based on Wiring .
Nowadays at Kickstarter could be seen a crowd-funded project for highly upgraded version of Arduino board, which turns the platform into micro-computer with improved performance. The device is called UDOO and supports Linux (to be more exact, this is Linaro, an optimized version of Ubuntu) and Android. As hardware UDOO offers 1GB of RAM memory, 1 GHz processor (dual or quad core), several USB ports, Wi Fi module, Bluetooth device, Micro SD card slot which is used as boot device.

So far – so good, but what is the exact purpose of UDOO? It is supposed to stimulate your creativity and help you while creating different DIY gadgets such as game controllers, LED light-controllers, etc. The project is developed by two companies who worked together on several previous projects, SECO USA Inc. and Aidilab.
